Snow and Ice

Whether the winter weather brings snow, ice, fog or rain, there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of a road accident.

Vplough

  • Allow extra time for journeys.
  • Keep extra distance between your vehicle and others to give more time to slow down and stop on slippery roads.
  • Use a high gear to avoid wheel spin and remember to manoeuvre gently.
  • Don't lock your wheels while braking - select a low gear, allow your speed to drop, then use the brake pedal gently.
  • If you do start to skid, ease off the accelerator gently. Don't brake suddenly.

Road Conditions

Dumfries and Galloway will do a number of things to help to keep Council roads, cycle and pedestrian areas clear for use during adverse weather conditions. More information can be found on the Winter Service page on Dumfries and Galloway Council's website.
