Ready for Travel

In winter, before you leave home consider whether your journey is necessary. If so, actively plan your journey.

Tyre Tracks

Always drive with extra care. Although each winter Dumfries and Galloway Council plans the order in which roads will be gritted when ice and snow are forecast don't make assumptions over road conditions. For more information to the Gritting roads, pavements and car parks page on the Council website.

Before you set off, it is important that you:

  • Ask the question 'Is my journey necessary?', if not, don't travel
  • Check the weather forecast and road conditions.
  • Consider alternative routes.
  • Consider alternative modes of transport, and check with bus, rail and air companies about any changes or cancellations to services.
  • Allow extra time for your journey and for any onward connections.
  • Plan your journey

Information on road and weather conditions is available from Traffic Scotland. Free Android and iPhone apps are available from the Traffic Scotland website provide the latest travel information.
