Utilities Failure

Disruption to utilities supplies can happen for a number of reasons and can often be sudden with very little or no advance warning. This can have an impact on gas, electricity and/or water supplies.

Preparation of pdf icon Household Emergency Life-saving Plan (HELP) [112kb] will help you with the essential supplies and details you may need during the period of disruption.

If the supply of gas or electricity fails use the items that you have put together in your HELP such as:

  • A wind-up or battery powered torch and radio, with spare batteries
  • Candles and matches
  • Easily prepared food and bottled water

Remember to:

  • Listen to your radio for further useful information, including when you can expect services to return to normal and whether you are advised to switch off your supplies at the main
  • Regularly check on family, friends and neighbours, particularly anyone that you know is vulnerable in these types of situations
  • Be careful when using candles - put them in a proper candle holder and make sure they are kept well away from curtains and furniture.
  • Put on warm clothes if the weather is cold during a power cut

Information on what to do during an emergency can be obtained direct from the utility supplier:
